Occupational Exposure Limit Recommendations for Peracetic Acid
Pechacek, hospital Osorio, Caudill and Peterson from Ecolab recently published an article in Toxicology Letters titled “Evaluation of the toxicity data for peracetic acid in deriving occupational exposure limits: A minireview“.* As the title suggests the authors reviewed and summarized the available literature on the health effects of peracetic acid (PAA) and the suggested, patient and legislated occupational exposure limits (OELs) for the vapor. Based on this analysis they derived both short term exposure limits (STELs), 15 minutes time weighted average (TWA) between 0.4 and 0.5 ppm (cf. ACGIH STEL TLV = 0.4 ppm) and Long term exposure limits (LTELs) calculated as 8 hr. TWAs of 0.1 to 0.2 ppm. Based on the health hazards of exposure to PAA vapor, the authors recommended a combined STEL/LTEL OEL approach to workplace safety.
